How To Get Your Kids To Brush Their Teeth

Welcome back to another blog from the office of Robert D. Moores, DDS. Are you having trouble getting your kids to brush and floss their teeth every day? Have you tried everything? Today we have for you FOUR fresh ideas for getting your child to build good home hygiene habits. We hope these are helpful and will help your child love taking care of their smile in no time! If you have any questions or need to schedule an appointment, please contact our team. Your family’s oral health is our top priority!

Get A Toothbrush They Enjoy

Probably the easiest thing you can do to get your child more interested in dental care is to buy them a toothbrush with a fun design! There are tons of kid-friendly toothbrushes out there. We recommend maybe even taking your child to the store with you and allowing them to choose their own brush (just make sure it is the right size for their smaller mouth!). This is a great way to get your child involved and excited about using their cool new toothbrush.

Use A Rewards System

We are not suggesting that you bribe your child, but giving them an incentive to brush and floss every night is a great way to get them to do what you want to do. Maybe if they go through their dental hygiene routine properly, you can allow them to stay awake 30 minutes longer. Or possibly have 15 minutes of extra television time. Use your resources to encourage good behavior and allow your kids to feel like they are being rewarded for it!

Use One Of These Cool Apps

If nothing else is working, try one of these cool dental hygiene apps to get your child to brush their teeth! They are designed to help them brush for the total two minutes recommended as well as make it fun for your kid.

Brush DJ – Free app available for both iPhones and Android devices. This app connects to your music library (or plays free music from the app) to help your child know when to stop brushing! Just hit play and brush until the song stops!

Aquafresh Brush Time – Available for iPhones and Android devices. This app turns brushing into a game. Each time your child brushes, they earn points to buy items for the game. Also plays music to help them time their brushing.

Chopper Chums – Available for iPhones and Android devices. This app allows your child to choose an animal character and this brush, floss, and rinse their way to earning treats for their character.

Disney Magic Timer – Free app available for both iPhones and Android devices. This app uses Disney entertainment to help motivate your kids to brush! If you can’t convince them, maybe their favorite disney character can.

Brush Along With Them

Did you know that you are setting an example for your child? Of course you do. So set an example of great oral health care and brush alongside your child! This will provide some wonderful bonding time as well as helping to educate your child about the importance of great dental health. Participate in this ritual with your children … they want to be just like you, so show them what a healthy adult with great oral hygiene habits looks like!

Make An Appointment

Still having trouble getting your child to brush their teeth? Schedule an appointment to get some advice on dental hygiene and preventive care for children. Even if you are not having trouble with their home hygiene habits, be sure to maintain their biannual checkups! These visits are just as important for helping your child maintain great oral health as brushing and flossing is. Simply contact our office to schedule a visit.
